Governor General plants an outsourcing tree

Yesterday on his state visit to India, Governor General David Johnston, along with High Commissioner of Canada to India Stewart Beck, visited software and outsourcing giant Infosys. He planted a tree and participated in a panel discussion on simplifying rules of cross border trade.

Last fall, Infosys was investigated for circumventing immigration laws in an alleged visa scam that brought thousands of workers into the US to be paid at Indian wages - giving them an advantage in underbidding local competitors - and "building a system to teach applicants how to deceive immigration authorities"
"Infosys was also accused of making errors on thousands of I-9 forms that are required to determine a person's work eligibility. Agents from Homeland Security Investigations who reviewed about 9,000 I-9 forms as part of the federal probe found more than 80 per cent of them had errors."
Infosys avoided a criminal court case by paying a $34-million settlement fee instead.
Infosys : "Those claims are untrue and are assertions that remain unproven."

Canada Revives Infosys' North America Dream

The meeting of the Governor General of Canada with IT behemoth Infosys is likely to raise hope for the sector and its North American aspirations amid visa uncertainty.
On concerns around temporary foreign workers and stricter visa requirements, Commissioner Stewart Beck:
"so they will be moving people back and forth and we see Canada, because we have a North American Free Trade Agreement, as an excellent location for Indian as well as other companies to locate and to capitalise on the North American market."
Canada’s location is near ideal for Indian IT companies due to the close proximity of the US, which is their biggest software export market. With the US all set to tighten their visa norms with the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill, close locations for client servicing and other operations will be an option Indian IT companies will consider carefully.
On the cap on visas, Beck said that there are policies that the companies were expected to meet. “There are some sensitivities in the country that have to be recognised,” he said
Awesome.

Happy Shut-the-Fuck-Up-13 Day

At his last Con caucus meeting and presser five months ago, Harper so disliked the grilling he got from media about Nigel Wright's cheque to Senator Mike Duffy and what Steve knew about it - see above - that today he decided to allow only cameras into his pre-throne speech caucus meeting without the accompanying annoying reporters.

The press gallery rebelled, responding that if reporters weren't to be allowed in, then cameras and photographers wouldn't attend either.
No one was surprised when Sun Media broke ranks and bravely stepped into the breach with a:
Sun News Exclusive : Harper addresses Tory caucus
"Our Sun News cameras were allowed in. You will not see that video anywhere else."

But no worries, Steve sent out the whole speech at 140 characters a pop from the safety of twitter so as not to be entirely left out of Speech from the Throne Day, now affectionately known on twitter as # STFU13 or Shut the Fuck Up Day

Dear Governor General David Johnston :
After you give Harper's speech, don't forget to wash your hands afterwards and put the seat back down.

5pm Update : Conflack Fred DeLorey :

"You won’t believe what the Press Gallery just did in Ottawa. Some media decided to boycott an important speech by our Prime Minister – one where he laid out his vision for our country, before today’s Speech from the Throne."

Yes, this speech was so important Steve didn't want any reporters there.

Governor General Captain Kirk ?

Steve is trolling for someone new to prorogue parliament on demand.
He is apparently pissed at Governor General Michaƫlle Jean because the first time round she kept him hanging for a couple of hours over what he considered to be "a routine matter".

The Governor General William Shatner facebook page has over 2,000 members.

Somehow I'm not seeing it happening.

Emperor Steve

Montreal Simon catches Steve playing Napoleon on Canada Day :

"Harper managed to get the military to give him a salute that's normally reserved for the Governor-General. As Heritage Minister James Moore explains in the video, this was something that the Prime Minister apparently wanted."

Really? How very presidential of him.

The Governor General is the Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Forces – not the Prime Minister - but I guess since she allowed him to suspend parliament and declare himself head-of-state back in December, she may as well let him play with her honour guard as well.
.
Update : Good point. Impolitical notes the hideous irony of James Moore, Minister of Heritage, being sent out to defend this latest example of "creeping political vandalism".

Steve pulls the fire alarm and walks into the exam

GG says it's ok and grants him an eight week extension on his separatists and socialists topic.

"Following my advice, the Governor General has agreed to prorogue Parliament," Harper said outside Rideau Hall after a two-hour meeting with Jean."
