Steve kicks off 9/11 blather week

with a CBC interview targeting "Islamicism" as the "major threat to Canada".

Islamicism?

"So what are we then?" respond the Unabomberanians, Norwegochristofarians, and McVeighlians. "Choppity liverers?"
"There are other threats out there, but that is the one that I can tell you occupies the security apparatus most regularly in terms of actual terrorist threats," Harper said.
Funny you should mention what "occupies the security apparatus", Steve ...

"Militant Extremists in the United States" : Council on Foreign Relations, Feb.7, 2011 :

"Since September 11, the threat of internationally based Islamic extremist networks has dominated concerns of Homeland Security officials. And while authorities say the threats posed by homegrown Islamic extremism is growing, the FBI has reported that roughly two-thirds of terrorism in the United States was conducted by non-Islamic American extremists from 1980-2001; and from 2002-2005, it went up to 95 percent."

If we weren't subjected to the fantastic nonsense of this blithering idiot it would all be funny.

For a while.

Then it would be sad.

The greatest threat Canada faces is global warming. Followed by an economic melt-down. Followed by some sort of neo-fascist society organized by selfish elites trying to preserve what's left of their position.

All those things are things that stephen harper is trying so desperately to bring about.

I've read that Daniel Pipes, founder of Campus Watch (cuz there's a terrorist in every classroom dontcha know), promoted the term.

Let me guess: Daniel Pipes is also a proud member of *Kampus Krusade for Krist* right?

Oh, that FBI! Must be a bunch of commie Islamofascists.

I think Stevie Blunder is pumping this angle simply because a lot of Canadians have never met a Muslim. If it were seventy-five or a hundred years ago, he'd be going all in for the Yellow Peril. Boogeymen work best when you don't know anything about them and have a big blank that the boogie-promoters can fill up with their own fantasies.

Islamicism used to mean Islamic studies; now it just means douchebag alert!

I agree. Only threats inside the U.S. are worthy of concern. If the Jihadists want to slaughter their fellow Muslims by the thousands, who gives a sh*t !!

Anon2: I assume you're referring sarcastically to R2P, usually confused with R2P Conoco-Phillips, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Halliburton, GE, Chevron, Lockheed Martin, Citigroup, Occidental Petroleum, etc. etc..., which has little to do with our $92-billion security theatre bonanza.

Great link, BY, thanks.

lolz!

Ok but what if ConocoPhillips presence in Libya saved a few thousand lives? Would you still be against it?

A viable argument, Anon, and one sometimes made here by my old friend Croghan.

However - a thought experiment...

Syria decides we've kicked the Attawapiskat people around long enough and they russle up UN support to send some planes over here to offer aerial support which unfortunately wind up bombing a bunch of Attawapiskat and non-Attawapiskats. And then while they're at it they also send over some Syria Gaz&Oil execs to help us rewrite our mining and extraction laws to benefit their Canadian partners in Suncor while their version of Jason Kenney holds a presser to say maybe they won't be leaving just yet.
Are you ok with that?

Coz if you aren't, you're really only talking might makes right.
And we already know where that leads.

Islamicism means that he supports the war on terror and therefore needs to justify all the new military toys for the boys and ofcourse keep the shareholders in the military industrial complex corporations happy and donating to the Con cause and .... finally, maintaining the fundamentalist Christian vote

Blather, Alison? Blather?

Alison said...

Yup - blather.
9/11 was a war crime, an atrocity. But people have had ten years now to figure out that Bush and Obama have achieved what Osama bin Laden himself failed to do and I'm done listening to anyone who doesn't acknowledge that fact.

The real threats are wall street and climate change, but since we cant fight on those fronts we need an enemy, preferably hard to define and really not all that scary.
